on Gurdjieff Work

Gurdjieff Work is a way to to make humans “wake up”, that is, know the true self and set them free. We human beings is born and die wasting our time like machine only responding to the surroundings.  Gurdjieff asserts that there is no point practicing some religious trainings in a place separated from people, no matter how hard you try. His thought corresponds to the fact that Buddha couldn’t realize himself through mortification of the flesh. Then, what shall we do? He says that human beings have to work in society regardless of the kind of work. The best job which causes a man rare awakening is like this:

1. Physically tough and exhausting labor is desirable.

2. On emotional and mental aspects, the bigger the stress from co-workers, a terrible boss, or customers, the better. A job which assigns hard quota to you is preferable.

  • make A ~ Aを〜させる
  • that is つまり
  • self 自己
  • set A free Aを自由にする
  • respond to A Aに反応する
  • there is no point ~ing 〜しても意味がない
  • no matter how~ どれくらい〜でも
  • correspond to A Aに一致する
  • realize oneself 悟る
  • mortification of the flesh 苦行
  • society 社会
  • regardless of A Aに関係なく
  • kind 種類
  • cause A B AにBをもたらす

He also says the bigger that responsibility for your family which you cannot escape from, the better, and that unstable jobs, where you can be fired anytime and have no guarantee of future, are preferable to stable jobs like civil servants.

But it is no use doing those jobs without consciousness of awakening. You have to work under stress observing your mind, which also corresponds to Buddha’s words that you must not be a government employee. Although Gurdjieff called this way ‘the fourth way’ and regarded it as the best way to awakening, I think it is not good in instability of observing the mind. An ordinary man cannot observe his mind as he is working.

  • it is no use ~ing 〜してみても無駄だ
  • regard A as B AをBと見なす

I’m sure when “observing the mind” is replaced with “gratitude recall”, it is much easier and faster for each one to get surprising change like himself. It really works if you concentrate on your work, giving off gratitude without thinking any difficult things. Just work, repeating in your mind “I・KA・SHI・TE・I・TA・DA・I・TE   A・RI・GA・TO・U・GO・ZA・I・MA・SU —thank you so much for keeping us alive.”  I describe it as ‘my fifth way.’

  • replace A with B AをBと取り替える
  • concentrate on A Aに集中する
  • give off A Aを放つ
  • describe A as B AをBと述べる
