celebration on Tanabata Festival

When did the human beings begin to pray to God for something at all?

  • at all そもそも
  • human beings 人間
  • pray 祈る

When I concentrate on ages far away from the present civilization, primeval times, I feel that there used to be an age when God, creatures and human beings were communicating with one another. The thought about God on the part of humans at that time was that they didn’t know anything about it but that it was the source of their lives, which made all the living things stay alive. They accepted the notion as a matter of fact not from reasoning but from instinct.

  • one another お互い
  • on the part of A Aの側での
  • a matter of fact

Even at that time, there were natural disasters, conflicts and crop failures because of bad weather. But each individual could communicate with God one on one and feel a sense of unity all the time. It seemed that they tasted every experience in full blast,no matter they were good or bad, and experienced joy, anger, grief and pleasure with God. This state of living is called Kannagara(カンナガラ). If you lead a life conscious of your indwelling god in the heart, you will feel your heart warm and realize that God has already existed in yourself.

  • sense of unity 一体感
  • all the time いつも

  • experience 経験
  • joy, anger, grief, and pleasure
  • lead a life 生活を送る

Though there happen good things and bad things in life, if you realize Kannagara, meaning living with God, you won’t feel like escaping from unhappiness nor praying to God for help. Since the tragedy is unhappiness you and God are experiencing together, you must feel the mind is coming up that you should taste it flat out and with a happy heart. When you do so, miracles will happen to you. And you must feel like praising and devoting gratitude to God. This is Norito(祝詞), the words celebrating God.

  • flat out 全力で
  • with a happy heart 明るく

The custom of praying to God for desires began since the time humans could communicate with God was over. So it is not good that parents tell their children that if he or she prays to God,  the desires will come true. Because such attitude makes them stop making efforts, thinking human beings are helpless so they have no choice but to depend on God, and keeps them away from God.

  • custom 慣習
  • desire 願望
  • be over 終わる
  • have no choice but to~ 〜せざるを得ない
  • depend on A Aに頼る
  • keep A away from B AをBから引き離す

Tanabata Festival is the day when parents teach their children that it is the day celebrating the annual meeting of Orihime(織姫)and Hikoboshi(彦星)not the day they pray for something they want.
