want to do many things to make people happy

On a holiday during Obon vacation, I was watching a movie on cable TV. Changing the channel, I saw a movie broadcast, called “The Beast to Die”, starring Mr.Yusaku Matsuda. The movie is more than 25 years old. I watched it thinking ” Ah, good times.” He acted the role of a man hiding madness.

  • Ah, good times.

Seeing the movie, I remembered the comment of one of his bereaved family at the time when he died of bladder cancer. The member of his family said that Yusaku Matsuda would often say to his family near the end of his life fighting his illness ” Should I be born again, I wanna do many things to make people happy.”

  • die of A Aで死ぬ
  • a life fighting one’s illness

In this world, he became successful in the career he loved and would have made almost all of his worldly dreams or desires come true. And what he thought at the time he mused over his death calmly in his life under medical treatment was “wanted to do things for others.”

This comment had long remained in my mind, seeing the comment as himself. If his purpose in this life had been “to be rich” or “to make my dream come true,” he would have wished those desires in the next life. But it was different. His desire was “want to do things for others.”

  • remain 残る

  • different 違った
  • others 他人

I feel this to be one of the important purposes of life. Well, since all and everything derive from the Original God and we were given birth by it, his words can be paraphrased into “want to do things for me as well as others.”

  • feel A to be~ Aを〜であると感じる
  • since S+V SはVするので
  • derive from A Aを起源とする
  • the Original God 根源神
  • give birth to A Aを産む
  • as well as A Aだけでなく

It is hard to please inherent god in your body, because you cannot tell a lie to or bluff  it. A person who can take good care of himself, his family or those around him can value many others with all his heart. You must not do any volunteer work neglecting your family, nor must you practice any religion for yourself only neglecting a service and care for your family. Such faith is far from that of the righteous god.

  • tell a lie 嘘をつく
  • take care of A Aの世話をする
  • those around A Aの周りの人々
  • with all one’s heart 心から

Mr. Matsuda may have made his body work too hard and neglected his health. But it would have been his way of life in this world. We would like to take care of our body as much as possible, which we borrowed from our ancestors, whether we like it or not, make full use of it under the given circumstances and give it back to them.

  • may have pp 〜したかもしれない
  • make A work hard Aを酷使する

  • would like to~ 〜したいものだ
  • borrow 借りる
