Gratitude gives spirits awareness

A couple of days around 15 August are the time when spirits of ancestors who cannot rest in peace in the World of the Dead and the World of Spirits are allowed to come back to the World of Reality.

  • a couple of A  2・3のA
  • the World of the Dead 幽界
  • be allowed to~ 〜するのを許される
  • the World of Reality 現実界

Spirits of ancestors who rest in peace in a spiritual world could come over to their offsprings or favorite places at will anytime if they like. But in reality, since they have almost no attachment to this world, they seldom come.  On the other hand, those who died recently or belong to the lower spiritual world don’t have any freedom there and cannot come back freely to the World of Reality.

  • at will 意のままに
  • on the other hand 一方
  • recently 最近
  • belong to A Aに属している

But during Obon Festival, they are also allowed to come. Because they have still some attachment to this world, they try to experience what they want by using a body of their offspring.

For example, if a spirit had any attachment to food, he would possess one of his offsprings and try to eat his favorite food. The obsessed offspring would feel like eating something he doesn’t really like, or drinking alcohol he can’t drink for no reason. Also he would visit some place he doesn’t usually do.

  • for no reason どういう訳か

During the period of Obon Festival, to meet up with relatives and friends, have your favorite feast and have a pleasant talk is to hold a kind of memorial service of realizing deceased spirits’ desires in place of them.

  • meet up with A Aと会う
  • have a pleasant talk
  • a kind of A 一種の
  • in place of A Aの代わりに

But be careful. Don’t have a fight at the occasion. Some of the restless, wandering spirits incite a living person to start a fight. You had better not get angry even if you get into trouble. Just think the other person is obsessed with a spirit and feel sorry for him, who is being used by some wandering spirit. Later he will wonder why he did such a foolish thing.

  • occasion 機会
  • incite A to~  Aに〜するよう仕向ける
  • get angry 怒る
  • even if S+V たとえSがVするとしても
  • the other person 相手
  • feel sorry for A Aを可哀想に思う

Toward restless, wandering spirits, showing them your praiseworthy way of life is not enough to make them relieved. If they are in anguish, they are in anguish all the same. If they feel lonely, they feel lonely after all. They cannot afford to learn something by seeing their offsprings. It is true of us living humans. It’s like an adult who has eaten enough says to a hungry child “Hey, look at my smiling face. A smiling face is good.” Devoting gratitude and offering smoke of incense sticks to restless spirits can console them most and have them get new awareness.

  • praiseworthy 立派な
  • be in anguish 苦悶している
  • all the same それでもやはり
  • after all 結局は
  • be true of A Aに当てはまる
  • have A ~ Aに〜してもらう
  • awareness 気づき
