Practice is more important than a bunch of farfetched ideas.

Today, when I was driving a car for business use, I happened to hear a radio advice program, in which a mother with three children needed a piece of advice. Her eldest son had a mental disability and visited a protective institution regularly and her second son, 22 , had a normal healthy body. Her eldest daughter was 16 and went to high school. And the consulting woman had her husband.

  • car for business use 営業車

The problem was her second son. He had secluded himself in a house since high school. According to her, he often punched his unresisting brother at home, attributing his being bullied at school to his brother. Never understanding what was going on, the eldest brother never resisted being punched. His parents tried to stop their second son from doing such terrible things but he wouldn’t stop. So they made him live alone in an apartment. They paid all of the cost. He has never worked before and he is already 22. He demands that his parents are responsible for what he is, so they should give more money to him, or otherwise let him stay with them and take care of him.

  • according to A Aによれば
  • attribute A to B AをBのせいにする
  • stop A from~ing Aが〜するのを止める

One of the consultants in the radio program said to her that now that he has come of age, she is not to blame and she should keep away from him. When the woman asked the consultant what her and her husband to do if her second son should storm her house in a rage, the consultant’s advice was “Go to the police.” And I agree with him.

  • come of age 成人になる
  • be to blame 責めを負うべき
  • keep away from A Aに近づかないでおく
  • storm A in a rage Aに怒鳴り込む
  • agree with A Aに賛成する

I felt sorry for her. I felt her lenient, good spirituality. She had been trying hard to protect her family. Her life is too harsh, even if she chose her own fate. If this situation should continue, he is likely to threaten his family and set a fire to their house or kill them. Such murder cases have been increasing these days.

  • feel sorry for A Aを可哀想に思う
  • even if S+V たとえSがVするとしても
  • fate 運命
  • keep on 続く

A piece of advice, such as introspection, reflection, efforts and accepting karma, would be lost on the family under such situations. In the first place, I felt that the ancestors belonging to the husband’s family line had never had any memorial service held for a long time. I feel there exist a lot of ancestral spirits who need help. The lack of a memorial service had effects on their children, too. Under such harsh circumstances, wives would be apt to be dragged into a new religion whose members have to pay to the group, and bogged down in unhappiness as a result of being alienated from her inner god.

  • in the first place
  • the lack of A Aがないこと
  • be apt to~ 〜しがちである
  • bogged down in A Aに泥沼にはまる
  • as a result of A Aの結果として

If she put it into practice to hold a memorial service for her ancestors, with gratitude being a key, her second son’s mind is sure to change, though she may have a hard time at first because a lot of spirits will come close to her.

  • put A into practice Aを実行する
  • be sure to~ きっと〜するだろう
  • have a hard time 辛い思いをする
  • at first 最初は

If the present situation were to continue, he would sympathize with spirits of Hell. This World of Reality is very rigorous world. I wish she would deliver a devastating blow at her doom with a weapon, that is, the appreciative words given at Geku(外宮)of Ise Grand Shrine (伊勢神宮), rather than be lost in the doom without resistance. Anyway, it is more important that we console our ancestral spirits than a bunch of farfetched ideas.

  • deliver a devastating blow
  • that is つまり
