Mt.KuramaーA Secret of the Spiritual Dump Site

For more than a thousand years the capital of Japan had been Kyoto(京都), where the Imperial Palace existed. If a lot of people live in a small area, the energy of emotions of the human beings, such as joy, anger, grief and pleasure or scream and cry, is accumulated there. If concentrated, unsatisfied thought energy turns into an evil spirit or a ghost and is attracted to a person who gives off the same kind of vibration. This is what is called possession.

Unsatisfied thought energy is produced due to many causes like sexual love or money trouble. I feel Heian period and Meiji period were the times evil spirits were especially active. The Imperial Court put up the spiritual barrier of Taoism around the capital Kyoto to keep it safe. There was always a person who slayed evil spirits in Kyoto in every period. Of all those people, ABE no Seimei(安倍晴明) and Kukai(空海)  stood out. The magico-religious rites and prayers of the esoteric Buddhism of Kukai were based on Taoism.

A lot of waste is produced every day at the place where a lot of people live as we know it. There is a municipal dump site in the rural area where I live. It is in the valley and people dump various garbage into it. I hear that when the dump site gets full, it will be covered with soil and made into a park. If children, several decades from now, should play with sand in the park and dig deeply in the sandpit, they might find curious articles and get excited. But there might be horrible industrial wastes or deadly poisonous things among those things. A child might take one of the dangerous things to home carefully and hide it under the bed. If poisonous gas should leak out from it, it might cause damage to the other family members and the neighbors as well as the child himself.

Well, ABE no Seimei and Kukai sent evil spirits they caught into a certain place in Kyoto and sealed it up. The place was like a prison for ghosts or a spiritual dump site. It was where negative thought energy of the people in Kyoto, which was a closed basin, gathered naturally because of the current of the magnetism of the earth. The people of those days felt the area to be gloomy somehow. So they came to call the mountain in the area “the Dark mountain” because it looked dark even in the day time. This is the spiritual derivation of the word Mt. Kurama(鞍馬山, the English word “dark” is pronounced as “kurai” in Japanese). It is located in the direction of Kimon(鬼門, the demon’s gate) , the northwesterly direction, of the center of Kyoto.

In recent years some visitors to Mt. Kurama who have never felt spiritual things before, digging up the dump site for ghosts, get excited saying something like “Oh, I can feel something! Feels great!!” This is because their skin is poisoned spiritually by touching the waste of the ghosts accumulated for more than a thousand years. Some ghosts are seized with sexual desire and others killed people for money. Being ignorant is really horrible. By the way, a gatekeeper stands at the dump site so that the waste won’t leak out. The gatekeeper, who is also an evil spirit, has been sent from the World of Hell(地獄界) by Purification God in order that he fights against other evil spirits in the dump site who try to get out of it. The form of the gatekeeper is that of a giant Tengu(天狗), a long nosed goblin.

What I have mentioned above is a relatively new event. It’s only about a thousand and several hundred years ago. In fact, the karma of this event was in the super ancient Japanese Archipelago. There was so mortal a combat as to change the from of the land between the extraterrestrials who eat human souls and the beings who nourish them. There are three spots in Japan where the former have been sealed up. One is Mt. Kurama(鞍馬山) and the second is Mt.Kurai(位山) in Gifu prefecture. Mt.Kurai is where evil spirits have been sealed up with the word Kurai implying “the Dark mountain.” And the third is a certain mountain where “balls are put.” There has been a custom in Japan since ancient times of worshiping an evil spirit who has been sealed up as a deity. So keep in mind that the idea of gaining some power by visiting a shrine or some place called a sacred place can be really dangerous.
