FAQ 33-34

Question 33

I used to work for a real estate company as a salesman. Some customers buy a land and the building on it and others only a vacant lot. The company didn’t have a shinto priest perform a purification ceremony of a land. We asked customers who had bought a vacant lot to build a house if they wanted the purification ceremony and if they did, we started the construction work after they held the ceremony on his own. But we didn’t tell customers who had bought a land and the house on it that we didn’t have the purification ceremony performed for the land though if asked we told about it. I didn’t have any doubt about what we did in those days. Now I feel responsible for having been ignorant of this matter. So I have some questions.

1. Is it effective if we have a shinto priest perform a purification ceremony of a land before a customer buys it ?

2. In the case of a leased land, should the owner take part in the ceremony?

3. Is there something we should do for customers who have bought a land and the house on it where the purification ceremony wasn’t performed?

  • used to~ 以前は〜していた
  • real estate 不動産
  • customer 客
  • vacant 空いた
  • purification ceremony お祓い
  • construction 建設
  • on one’s own 自分で
  • doubt 疑い
  • responsible 責任がある
  • ignorant 無知な
  • matter 問題
  • effective 効果のある
  • leased land 借地
  • owner 所有者
  • take part in A Aに参加する

1. Even if no one lives on a land, performing a purification ceremony is meaningful and effective. Whether the land will have some spiritual problem or not depends on it. It is important to offer greetings to the spirits who reside on the land.

2. It is advisable that the owner of a land takes part in the purification ceremony if possible because the karma of the land results in that of the owner after all.

3. There’s nothing you can do as a seller. The residents are responsible for all the other things about the land once they start to live there.

Human beings must have a habit of offering gratitude to the spirits of the land, whether it is rented or bought, which has effects on their fortune and health. It is important to enshrine the local deity in a household shinto altar, prepare two sakaki plants and a small container with water in it and greet the deity with gratitude everyday.

  • gratitude 感謝の気持ち
  • have effects on A Aに影響を与える
  • fortune 運

Question 34

When I was organizing my bank book and a seal, I notice that the seal had a pattern of Kannon, Buddhist deity of mercy, on it. My mother gave it to me about ten years ago. Its explanatory leaflet said that the seal equals as a Buddhist altar, so the user should worship it when it is not in use. It must have been expensive and I think my mother bought it for my luck. It seems that a lot of seals are sold for luck like this. Is it better for me to dispose of it?

  • bank book 通帳
  • mercy 慈悲
  • explanatory leaflet 説明書
  • equal as A Aに等しい
  • worship 拝む
  • expensive 高価な
  • dispose of A Aを処分する

Please use it carefully in response to your mother’s love. It’s no problem that you use it unless you’re dependent on it. Seals are necessary as a tool but it is never true that they make your life better or make you happy. Rather, the seals which are sold by those who try to sell it telling such a lie are possessed with their bad thought energy. As long as you don’t care about such a superstition and lead lives thankfully everyday you are not affected by such a seal. You can use it overwriting it with your magnetism of attachment. But if you cannot help feeling discomfort about the seal you have, you may use it after cleansing it with salt water.
