GIve, and it will be given to you.

Confucius once said “Respect deities, but keep away from them.” I think this means that you have to make every effort you can and stay away from deities paying respect to them.

  • Confucius

Miyamoto Musashi was influenced by the words of Confucius. He said in his book of The Way of Walking Alone , “Deities are sacred and to be respected, but I won’t depend on them.”

  • depend on A Aに頼る

A Japanese verb “keien-suru”(敬遠する) is derived from the Confucius’s words “respect but keep away from.” The meaning of “keiensuru” has now been changed into that of “avoiding troubles making no efforts.”

  • verb 動詞
  • be derived from A Aに由来する
  • avoid 避ける

There is no problem in offering gratitude to deities, spirits or humans. In the real world, too, you cannot judge if the other person is good or bad. If you ask a favor of someone who looks like a nice person, you don’t know what’s on his mind. He might be the kind of person that demands you return double the favor.

If you make it a rule to meet people with gratitude in your heart and help others, you, without asking for help, will be helped by some kind person when you’re in trouble.

  • make it a rule to~ 〜することにしている
  • ask for A Aを求める
  • be in trouble 困っている

A wicked person might not help you when you call for help. But it’s OK. Such a person will go away from you naturally due to some karma. Nothing good will come of being involved with such a person. If you always try to give gratitude for everything, your friends and acquaintances will be selected automatically.

  • due to A Aのために
  • be involved with A Aとつきあう

You can say the same thing about deities. You don’t have to worry about whether a deity you worship is a bad one or a good one. As long as you offer gratitude to them, there’s no problem.

Also, in holding memorial services for your ancestors, if you have any favor you want to ask of your ancestral spirits or you intend to depend on them, similar spirits who try to depend on you will gather around you, which may brings you discomfort.

If you always have the mind of giving gratitude during the service or in your daily lives, you will come to be strongly connected to spirits who want to give like you. Then you yourself is given.
