Only Understandable Words can Reach Ancestral Spirits

With a lot of people never having practiced holding any memorial service for their ancestors, those who do it, even if in their own way, are praiseworthy. Directing your mind to ancestors itself is important no matter how you do it. But, if you do it at all, I suggest that you do it effectively enough for the energy of your consolation to reach your ancestral spirits. This is why I don’t recommend that you do it with a memorial tablet only for a particular dead person.

In case you hold memorial services for a particular dead person, the period until the first anniversary of his/her death is important. Spirits resting in peace go to another world in 49 days at the shortest or one year at the longest, while spirits with unsatisfied mind, whose spiritual magnetism is heavy, will still have remained in this world even in a year. That is, they can’t rest in peace.

  • period 期間
  • at the shortest 最短で

In this case, they need help from another ancestral spirit who has been stable mentally and able to move around freely before going on to another world. With such a considerate help, spirits in pain could go to another world feeling secured thanks to the memorial services held by his/her offspring.

In short, as long as you hold memorial services only for a particular dead person who can’t move on his/her own, you can never get good results. Therefore, it is effective for offspring to hold ones for the whole ancestral spirits so that other ancestral spirits can also help one another with the use of the energy of your gratitude.

In Ise-Hakusan Dou way, you use a memorial tablet or Tanzaku, a strip of Japanese paper, with the words “The Place for Spirits of So and So Family” on it. You can put a notebook beside the memorial tablet in which the deceased’s name or information, such as a short history of life, is written. If the notebook is made of Japanese paper, it becomes more easy for ancestral spirits’ magnetism to get on the notebook.

  • so and so 何々の
  • the deceased 故人

Should you and the other family members disagree on the way of holding memorial services, it’s better for you to obey them because negative magnetism would arise and affect your ancestral spirits. It’s OK to put the Tanzaku in front of the Buddhist altar when you hold a memorial service alone, but doing it sneakily can also cause negative magnetism. So you don’t have to it.

  • Buddhist altar

The next important thing is not to offer a cryptic sutra or incantation to ancestral spirits. The negative magnetism arising from the sutra prevents them from being consoled. Imagine the scenes of the past where those sutras have been used. They have been used not in a pleasant situation but in a negative one such as human death, sadness, confining ghosts, anxiety for something curious out of fear and so on. As soon as you chant such a sutra, the switch is turned on of generating the negative magnetism the sutra has been accumulating for a long time.

  • as soon as S+V SがVするやいなや

Sakyamuni’s true will doesn’t lie in Buddhist sutras that were made up about 1000 years after he died. Foreseeing the present world where people are dependent on cryptic sutras, Sakyamuni predicted clearly that the age of decadence would come when his true teachings have lost their validity.

  • the age of decadence 末法
  • validity 有効性

It is absurd that people are chanting a sutra the meaning of which they don’t understand, pronouncing a series of cryptic words. This is like a mischievous Japanese is playing a hoax on his foreign friend by teaching a bad Japanese language. Kumaraju, the ancient translator of  Buddhism, (see also “Horrible Spiritual Trap Hidden in Heart Sutra” ) would laugh to see the people doing it with a serious face.

It is the heart of living people that is conveyed to spirits. What you think about spirits in understandable words gets on your consciousness and it reaches the spirits. If you’re not Japanese, use your own language in offering gratitude to your ancestors, and you can strengthen the power of energy of gratitude and it reaches them for sure.

  • convey 伝える
  • consciousness 意識
  • for sure 確実に
