Strange Spiritual Incidents are not Unusual and Have No Deep Meaning

The following is what a reader of this blog told me:

This is an experience one of my mother’s acquaintances, Ms.A, had more than 30 years ago. Ms. A was in her fifties and lived with her mother. One day her mother got sick and went into a hospital in a mountain far from her home. As Ms. A worked for a company, she drove her car once a week to visit her mother in the hospital, driving carefully on a winding slope to the hospital. She would leave home on Sunday afternoon and leave the hospital past nine p.m..

Her room of the hospital was a six-tatami-mat room shared with an old woman. The woman was always saying that she wanted to go home every time she saw Ms. A. One day, when Ms. A was making preparations for returning home, the old woman pled with Ms.A to take her home again and again. It was impossible for her to take the old woman out of the hospital, so she said “If you’ve recovered from your illness,” and left the hospital.

She was driving down the slope carefully in the dark past nine, when , taking a look at the rearview mirror, she found the old woman sitting in the rear seat. Driving down the road, she couldn’t look back. So she had a talk through the mirror. She pull over her car to the shoulder, wondering how she got into her car. And when she looked around, she found that she was gone. Surprised, she hurried back to the hospital and found that she had passed away a while before. She had never believed in spirits. She was so shocked at the strange incident that she was hospitalized for mental treatment.

There are two meanings of this story.

1)Strange indicents like this are not unusual. Seeing a spirit, taking a picture with a spirit in it, having a strange dream or hearing a strange voice etc − these are usual incidents. This kind of phenomena appear and disappear in our daily life. They have no deep meaning, so you don’t need to think about it at all. If I wrote about what I “see” everyday, I could write a book per day. But such a book would not be worth reading. Invisible beings, or spirits, are living just as we are. Such phenomena are just a scene in everyday life.

2)The influence of the power of thought on the real world is much stronger than you imagine. The old woman’s thought of strongly wanting to go home brought about the phenomenon. You are apt to think that the power of your thought is worthless and powerless, for it takes a while for what you’re thinking to be materialized. This is why people are always worrying about something. Indeed, your thought has a strong influence on the real world, far from powerless.

To hold a thankful memorial service for your ancestors, you have to spare time in a precious day just out of mercy for them without feeling any reaction from them. If you do a thing whose result is found soon, like work of equivalent exchange, the value is small in the spirit world. On the other hand, holding memorial services for your ancestors has a big value because you do it and keep on doing it only out of mercy for them never being sure of the effects.

  • mercy 慈悲
  • equivalent exchange 等価値交換
  • effect 結果
