True Meaning of a Buddha’s Saying

“In heaven and on earth, no one is a match for me.” It is said that no sooner had Buddha been born than he walked seven steps in four directions and said this with his right hand pointing to the heaven and his left hand the earth.

  • direction 方向
  • point 指差す

I was surprise to read this explanation online. The translation is misleading because it gives a self-righteous impression and make the readers think that Buddha is so great a person that they can’t hold a candle to him. I feel that the true meaning of his words is quite different. What the words spiritually mean is the following:

  • explanation 説明
  • misleading 誤解を招く
  • impression 印象
  • hold a candle to A Aの足元にも及ばない

*”In heaven and earth” … this world or universe, including all human beings and substances, is

*”no one is a match for me” …only a part of the body of the one and only Primordial Being, to which all and everything is connected. Therefore, there is only one being in the universe.”

Each person is like a finger. All human beings join together at a palm. They can trace back to the upper part of a body along an arm. Seeing that Buddha’s left hand was pointing to the earth, human beings may be like fingers of a left hand.

  • trace back 遡る
  • seeing that … …

Here’s an interesting thing. A right hand is on the opposite side of a left hand with a space between them. Then, what is the right hand? If you assume the fingers of your left hand to be human beings in the World of Reality, then you can regard those of your right hand as their spiritual bodies, which also join together at the palm of your right hand and can trace back to the upper part of your body. Your arms join together at the torso.

Speaking of “fingers,” I think of solar coronas. Coronas are born from the surface of the sun, extend in a lively way and fully stretch out. Then they begin to shrink and disappear into the surface of the sun. It’s like tentacles extend and shrink. Coronas, which are to disappear in the course of time, are just like people’s lives.

  • speaking of A Aと言えば

Every time I visit Izougu(伊雑宮)of Ise Grand Shrine, I perceive a spherical body that has coronas around it and the color of the sun. The coronas may represent all creatures living and dying forever. In Showa era, when the World of the Dead had much influence on this world, on visiting Izougu, I used to perceive a spiritual being who looked like a woman in twelve-layered ceremonial kimono or a mermaid. As the level of my spirituality got higher, I ceased to see a personal god, a spiritual being with the form of a human. After Heisei era began, I have perceived a spherical ball like a sun disc there.

  • every time S+V SがVする度に

Well, there are a lot of troubles and difficulties in this world. But remember that when you’re suffering, God is suffering, too. For you are part of the Primordial Being, or God. If your finger is cut deeply, your whole body feels the pain, too. Just as coronas disappear into the sun, all creatures are to go back to the matrix sooner or later. You have nothing to worry about. On the surface of the sun, or in this world, all you have to do is jump around and dance to your heart’s content.

  • suffer 苦しむ
  • matrix 発生源
  • to one’s heart’s content
