The Essence of Samurai Spirit

When a day is over, I say to myself “I Ka Shi Te I Ta Da I Te A Ri Ga To U Go Za I Ma Su,” thinking I’m happy to be alive. And I wake up with gratitude for being alive. I’m always conscious of life and death.

I’m very healthy now, but being able to live always and positively conscious of life and death is my asset and strong point, I think. And this is the essence of Samurai spirit. Fighting or killing is not. True samurai spirit lies in recognizing how precious one’s life is.

Samurais have to take care of their physical bodies, the carrier of of a soul, and live their lives in such a way that protects their bodies. In this respect, drivers who, always grateful for the present situations, drive their cars not to have any car accident can be said to be the practitioner of Samurai spirit.

There are people, regardless of sex and age, who live life so that they can protect both themselves and others. Until Meiji era, most Japanese people were so. Unfortunately, such a people have been decreasing in number these days.

Those who remind themselves of gratitude for being kept alive in everyday life know how precious their lives and live for themselves and others naturally. As you hold a memorial service for your ancestors every day, you will come to feel that your time is very precious and everything happening to you is a wonderful experience, no matter what, and to have an immovable, strong heart inside though you show your feelings such as joy, anger, grief and pleasure on the surface.

Even if you reach such a peaceful state of mind after falling ill, your scope of activities is restricted and may have difficulty enjoying your life. So it’s better to realize the fundamental truth that you’re being kept alive while you’re healthy enough to walk around.

It’s precious and fortunate that you’re well enough to work. Do not violate your inner self through work relationships. With regard to troubles with work, look on them calmly in terms of life and death. In this World of Reality, any trouble changes and comes to an end after all. Those who are conscious of life and death are strong and can enjoy life very much. Anyone can be such a strong person from now on.
